Frensham C.C. 13th September 1998
By David Oliver
In spite of considerable nervousness about the elements and Frensham's
propensity to ignore the elements we escaped with just one small shower just
before tea.
On losing the toss we bowled confident that Ian Mill would be
none the worse for a 12 month sabbatical from the game. In spite of having to
rearrange lunch with his mother at 2 hours notice (he had forgotten to put the
fixture in his diary) he bowled 12 overs 1 for 30 showing no signs of rustiness.
Brian picked up a couple of wickets including the very valuable one of their top
batsman with a magnificent delivery that took the top of leg stump. Guy bowled
an undeservedly unrewarded spell of 10 overs, Stephen got a bit of stick coming
on when the batsman were going well and Pablo picked up a couple of wickets at
the end.
A generous declaration left us 1 hour 10 mins + 20 overs to get 196
on a pitch that was getting noticeably drier.
After an astonishingly easy
catch offered by John Ball was dropped with the score in single figures Rolfe
and Ball were soon cruising along and we were heading for a 10 wicket win until
John Ball was out closely followed by John Rolfe. Still it was difficult to
complain about a 140 run opening stand (unless you were batting next!).
Cunningham came and went leaving it to Pablo and I to see us home with a couple
of overs to spare.
Champagne Moments:
Their opener being caught by Ian Mill off the first ball that Stephen bowled to him after he had played and missed at Ian for the previous 12 overs.
Brian's ball to dismiss their top batsman.
Pablo coming all
the way from Oxford to play
